Throughout almost his entire literary career, Haruki Murakami has built a recognizable type of narrative: his novels most often focus on male characters who find themselves in the space between everyday reality and irrational events. However, the writer's new novel became an exception to this system — for the first time in 77 years of his life and almost half a century of writing practice, a woman became the central character of a major work. Murakami spoke about the new book in an interview with the Nikkei newspaper, where he explained why he decided to change the usual structure of his texts, how this work is related to the topic of family and why he is now turning to a new point of view, according to Izvestia.

The first novel that broke the tradition

Murakami's new novel, "The Story of Kaho," is the first time a writer has completely shifted the focus of the narrative to a female character. Before that, his artistic system was almost always built around middle-aged men who were in a state of inner isolation and searching for meaning in a blurred world. In an interview, he explains that the decision to choose a new character is not related to experimentation, but to a change in perspective on family and human relationships.

The central character of the novel is a heroine named Kaho. Her story unfolds in a manner characteristic of Murakami: through everyday events, in which hidden emotional and psychological layers gradually manifest themselves. The plot is not fully revealed, but it is known that the narrative focuses on the inner state of the heroine and her interaction with others.

I made the main character, Kaho, a very ordinary girl, except that she likes to draw. The name Kaho came to my mind spontaneously. But it would be boring if she was born in the summer, so I made it so that she was born in the middle of winter (there is a hieroglyph meaning "summer" in the name of Kaho. — Ed.). I even thought about one name for a long time.

It is also noted that the new novel grew out of a series of short stories published in 2024. It was there that the elements first appeared, which later became the basis of a full-fledged text. In an interview, the writer emphasizes that the theme of family has become an important part of his later works, and it influenced the structure of the new book.

At the same time, the transition to a female protagonist is considered in the context of many years of criticism of Murakami's work. Researchers and readers have repeatedly noted that the female characters in his early novels often remained secondary or symbolic, and their inner world was not always fully revealed. That is why the new book is perceived as a noticeable change in the author's usual literary model, and the novel is discussed even before the translations are published.

From a jazz bar to world literature

Murakami was born in 1949 in Japan into a family of literature teachers. Despite this, in his youth he did not plan to connect his life with writing and at first chose a more applied path related to studying and working outside the academic environment.

My parents were Japanese language teachers, so we had a lot of books at home, and I read a lot. I think I should thank my parents for the opportunity to get to know these stories.

After graduating from Waseda University, he and his wife opened the Peter Cat jazz bar in Tokyo. This place became an important part of his daily life for several years and later influenced his literary style, especially the rhythm and musicality of the narrative.

The turning point in his biography is connected with the Yakult Swallows baseball game in the late 1970s. According to his recollections, it was during the game that he had the idea that he could write a novel, although he had not considered himself as a writer before.

This is how his first novel, Listen to the Song of the Wind, appeared, published in 1979. The book won the literary prize of Gunzo magazine and became the starting point of his writing career. After the success of his debut, Murakami left the management of the bar and focused entirely on literature, starting a professional writing career.

Why is Murakami read all over the world

Murakami's works have been translated into dozens of languages and have become part of world literary culture. His texts combine a realistic narrative with elements of the symbolic and irrational, where everyday life gradually shifts towards unusual events.

Haruki Murakami, speaking about his work

I want to write about unreal worlds in a realistic style. Since it's not fantasy, I have to write realistically, but it's technically difficult. In The Norwegian Forest, I set myself the task of writing in an absolutely realistic style, because I felt that I would not be able to move on until I mastered it perfectly. Now I can write almost anything I want.

One of the reasons for his global popularity is his way of combining everyday details with metaphysical or surreal elements without breaking the logic of the narrative.

Murakami uses a more realistic narrative form in his novel The Norwegian Forest, which made the book one of the most widely read Japanese works of the late 20th century. The work "Kafka on the Beach" reinforces parallel storylines and enhances the author's characteristic combination of realistic and symbolic levels of narration.

Haruki Murakami, speaking about the new book

Just as I looked at the world through the eyes of a 15-year-old boy when I wrote Kafka on the Beach, so now I look at things through the eyes of a 26-year-old woman. For example, I feel a little scared when I walk alone through the city at night. Of course, I'm a man, so I don't know how accurate that is.

In the Chronicles of a Clockwork Bird, the structure becomes more fragmented: reality and the inner world of the hero begin to intersect and influence each other. The 1Q84 trilogy, in turn, has become a large-scale international project, which is being discussed as one of the most notable literary releases of its time.

A writer without a Nobel Prize, who is named a favorite every year

For decades, Haruki Murakami has remained one of the most discussed writers in the context of the Nobel Prize in Literature. His name regularly appears on the lists of possible laureates, but the award itself has not yet been awarded to him.

At the same time, his literary recognition was formed through other international institutions and awards. Over the years, he has won major cultural awards, including the Princess of Asturias Award, which is awarded for contributions to the humanities and cultural fields. In 2025, Murakami was also noted for his lasting influence on world literature and his steady presence in the global cultural field.

Separately, his work is often considered among the authors whose influence is recognized during his lifetime, but whose Nobel prospect remains open. In this context, his name is often compared with Franz Kafka and Hans Christian Andersen, writers whose importance to world literature has been understood much more widely than institutional awards.
