WP reported on the threat of impeachment of Hegset due to the war with Iran
The U.S. House of Representatives may vote in November on the impeachment of Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth for conducting military operations in Iran without congressional consent. This was reported on November 1 by The Washington Post.
"There is a decent chance that this could pass through the House of Representatives, and I think that would be a stain on his record," said Republican Congressman Thomas Massey, who heads the initiative in the lower house.
In addition to the impeachment proceedings by critics from the Republican Party, Hegseth is threatened by representatives of the Democratic Party, led by Adam Smith, a senior member of the Armed Services Committee, and Congressman Jason Crowe. They intend to launch large-scale investigations of the agency's activities in three areas: military operations, politicization of the army, and corruption in defense contracts. They also intend to achieve the removal of the head of the Pentagon in case of victory in the midterm elections.
The official representative of the US Department of Defense, Sean Parnell, said that the department followed the law, and Hegseth is 100% committed to advancing the agenda of US President Donald Trump and will continue to work until the end of his presidential term. Trump himself called the threat of impeachment terrible, expressing full confidence in Hegseth.
The article clarifies that Hegset is criticized for waging an eight-month war in Iran, purging dozens of top military leaders, using the Signal messenger to transmit classified information about military strikes, as well as for concealing materials about the elimination of two people in Latin America by US forces.
Hegseth has been in charge of the U.S. Department of Defense for two years. Earlier, Republican senators demanded that Hegseth issue documents on the liquidation of alleged drug traffickers in Latin America by the US military. In response to months of refusal to provide these materials, the Senate threatened to block the confirmation of one of Trump's political appointees. As a result, Hegseth relented and gave lawmakers access to classified documents.
On September 15, Republican Congressman Thomas Massey proposed the impeachment of Pete Hegseth. The congressman accused the head of the Pentagon of repeatedly violating the US Constitution due to his actions during the military operation against Iran and the deaths of civilians in conflicts around the world.
