- Likhachev announced the continuation of the construction of nuclear power plants in Egypt
Sanctions against a number of Russian companies and contractors have slowed down payments and, as a result, the pace of construction of the El-Dabaa nuclear power plant in Egypt, but the project continues. Alexey Likhachev, CEO of Rosatom State Corporation, told Izvestia about this on October 28.
"The sanctions imposed by a number of our contractor companies dramatically slowed down payments a few years ago, and this could not but affect the pace of project implementation. A number of Western companies involved in the project have abandoned or sent appropriate rejection signals. But there is also good news: a number of Western companies have confirmed their participation, despite the sanctions pressure," he said in an interview with Izvestia correspondent Viktor Sineok.
According to Likhachev, the project has already been tested for durability. Despite the sanctions restrictions and the refusal of a number of Western companies to participate, work on the construction of the station continues.
The head of Rosatom noted that the project is still at an early stage, but Egypt's interest in the development of nuclear energy is expanding. In particular, there have been proposals to deploy small land-based reactors, and the Egyptian side is paying special attention to floating nuclear power plants.
On the same day, Anton Siluanov, Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister of the Russian Federation, said that Egypt, despite the sanctions restrictions, is able to pay loans to Russia, including for the construction of a nuclear power plant. As Siluanov noted, the issue is currently being resolved. After the imposition of sanctions on settlements against Russia, difficulties arose, but there are ways to overcome them.
