China Central Television (CCTV) has suspended broadcasts of Spanish La Liga matches amid a scandal involving soccer player Kylian Mbappe. This was announced on October 27 by the Chinese portal Pengpai with reference to representatives of the Media Corporation of China.

"Due to Mbappe's serious negative actions towards China, CCTV has completely stopped broadcasting La Liga and Mbappe—related matches since yesterday evening," the statement said.

It is clarified that the decision affected not only sports broadcasts, but also promotional materials featuring the French striker.

On the same day, Chinese beverage manufacturer Eastroc Beverage and Chinese food company Mengniu Dairy announced the termination of cooperation with French football player Kylian Mbappe after his joke about Mao Zedong.

The reason for the scandal was an interview with a Real Madrid football player, in which he talked about his favorite Internet memes. Mbappe said that his favorite meme is his face, edited with a graphic editor and superimposed on the face of a certain "Chinese dictator."
