The priest told about the prayers on St. Dmitry's Saturday
On St. Dmitrievsky Parents' Saturday, which in 2026 is celebrated on November 7, Orthodox believers can read the Psalter, the canon of the deceased or a short funeral prayer. Vladislav Beregovoy, a priest and head of the missionary department of the Pesochenskaya diocese, told Izvestia about this.
"At home, you can read a Psalter about the deceased, a canon about the deceased, or at least one prayer about the deceased," the priest said.
One of the most common prayers for the dead is a brief invocation to God, which is part of the Orthodox morning prayer rule. It can be read both on parental Saturday and on other days, naming the names of deceased relatives.
"Commemoration of the deceased on St. Dmitrievsky Parental Saturday is no different from commemoration on other Parental Saturdays of the year. For Orthodox Christians who have such an opportunity, it is important to come to worship the day before, on Friday. It is called parastas and usually starts at 17:00 or 18:00. This is a deep service in its content, dedicated, among other things, to the prayerful commemoration of our deceased relatives," Beregovoy explained.
On the morning of November 7, believers can take part in the Divine Liturgy, after which a memorial service is usually held. Before the service begins, it is customary to submit notes with the names of deceased Orthodox Christians for church commemoration.
If it is not possible to visit the temple on parental Saturday, you can submit notes in advance. In addition, in some churches and large monasteries, it is possible to transfer the names of the deceased for commemoration through social networks.
Beregovoy stressed that the most important part of the commemoration remains prayer, which believers can perform not only in church, but also independently at home.
