Pope Leo XIV delivered a traditional sermon to the faithful and said that he was gradually returning to work after surgery to remove the lower lobe of his right lung. This was reported on October 18 by the British newspaper The Guardian.

"Now that this difficult period is over, <...> I will gradually resume my activities," said Leo XIV.

The 71-year-old Pope was greeted with applause when he appeared in the window of the papal apartments of the Apostolic Palace. Leo XIV delivered a sermon and the traditional prayer "Angel of the Lord."

On October 13, Pope Leo XIV underwent surgery to remove a malignant neoplasm in his lung. Surgical intervention was performed using video-assisted technology. The operation was performed for about 1.5 hours, it was successful and without complications. During the operation, the pontiff had the lower part of his right lung removed.

On October 16, Leo XIV celebrated his first mass after surgery in the ward of the Gemelli Hospital, where he is recovering from lung surgery. It was noted that several employees of the Gemelli Hospital, as well as employees of the Vatican State Gendarmerie Corps, attended the mass.
