Hero SVO Medyulyanov spoke about the condition after the transplant of a donor hand
On October 17, Captain Vladimir Medyulyanov, a three-time knight of the Order of Courage, told Regnum news agency about the condition after the transplant of a donor hand.
"The operation was successful, here's my new pen. Healing will take several more weeks, even months. Then rehabilitation will begin. Healing of all nerves, veins, arteries, tendons, development," said the soldier.
Medyulyanov is currently under medical supervision. According to him, pain and swelling persist after surgery, and he receives a large number of infusions. At the same time, the transplanted arm remains warm, the blood flow in it is good, and the oxygen saturation of the blood is 99-100%. The fighter noted that the recovery is proceeding according to plan.
The upcoming rehabilitation will take a long time. Medyulyanov will spend the first three months in the hospital, where specialists will be engaged in restoring the functions of the transplanted limb. Then he will be allowed to travel home for about a month, after which he will alternate between staying at home and at the Sklifosovsky Research Institute.
"It's going to be a long, long rehabilitation. I'll spend the first three months in the hospital, working on it. After that, they will start to let you go home for a month. And it's time to alternate between home and Skliff," he shared.
The operation took place on October 14 at the N.V. Sklifosovsky Research Institute and lasted more than 12 hours. Medyulyanov became the third patient in Russia to have an upper limb transplant.
Hand transplantation is a complex medical procedure because the body can reject the transplanted tissue. In Russia, similar operations at the N.V. Sklifosovsky Research Institute began in 2025. The first upper limb transplant took place in April 2025, and the second in February 2026.
Medyulyanov is a graduate of the Far Eastern Higher Combined Arms Command School named after Marshal Rokossovsky. Before starting his military service, he served in the Far East. During the fighting, the soldier was wounded three times. After the third injury, his left arm was amputated.
Despite the difficult recovery period, Medyulyanov also completed training in the second stream of the federal program "Time of Heroes". Right now, the soldier's main focus is on recovering from surgery.
