- The share of refusals for car loan applications in the Russian Federation has reached 69%
In September 2026, banks rejected 69.3% of car loan applications. According to the National Bureau of Credit Histories (NBKI) on October 16, in early autumn the indicator increased by 3.6 percentage points compared to August, when it was 65.7%.
Among the 30 regions of Russia with the largest number of applications for car loans, the highest failure rates were recorded in the Irkutsk Region, Altai Territory, Krasnodar Territory, Krasnoyarsk Territory and Kemerovo Region (76.4%-74.5%). The lowest failure rate among these regions was recorded in the Nizhny Novgorod Region — 61.3%. This is followed by St. Petersburg, Tatarstan and Moscow, as well as Udmurtia.
The most noticeable increase in the share of refusals over the month occurred in the Volgograd region and Chuvashia — by 5 percentage points (percentage points) in each region. The Vologda, Tula and Sverdlovsk regions have also increased significantly. In Moscow, the bounce rate increased by 4.2 percentage points, in St. Petersburg — by 3.7 percentage points.
According to Alexey Volkov, NBKI's marketing director, the high rejection rate is due to tight monetary policy and restrictions on lending to borrowers with high debt loads. Banks are increasing the requirements for customers' credit histories in an effort to reduce the risk of delinquencies. At the same time, competition for borrowers with a high level of creditworthiness is intensifying. For clients with a personal credit rating above 750 points, the failure rate for car loan applications is 44%, the NBKI clarified.
The day before, it was reported that demand for new cars in Russia increased by 8.5% year-on-year in the third quarter of 2026. One of the growth factors was the reduction of the Bank of Russia's key interest rate from 17% to 14% per year, which increased the availability of car loans, experts noted.
