In October 2026, cases of wolves entering populated areas were recorded in several regions of Russia at once. In the Leningrad Region, predators increased their visits to the Gatchina district, in the Krasnodar Territory wolves attacked livestock, in Transbaikalia and the Jewish Autonomous Region residents were warned about the risks. The authorities are taking measures to regulate the number of animals and recommend that citizens take safety measures. All the details are in the Izvestia article.

Leningrad region

The Committee for the Protection of Wildlife of the Leningrad region reported on the release of wolves in the settlements of the Gatchina district. According to the post-harvest accounting data for April 2026, there were seven wolf species in the area. In the summer, the predators bred their offspring and are now actively training the young to hunt. It is easier for young wolves to study where easy prey can be found — near settlements, so cases of visits have become more frequent.

Work on population regulation is ongoing: five wolves have been hunted in the last two weeks alone. In connection with the confirmed exits to the settlement, the committee decided to additionally regulate four more individuals.

Residents are advised not to leave pets on their own, especially at night. Dogs on leashes in unfenced areas are easy prey for a predator.

Krasnodarskiy kray

The prosecutor's office of the Starominsky district held an interdepartmental meeting after information about an attack by wolves on domestic animals. Representatives of the rural administration, the district administration, the territorial division of the Ministry of Natural Resources and the hunting society have been invited to participate in connection with the attacks on livestock in the area of the Vesely farm.

The issues of interaction of authorized bodies in regulating the number of wolves, methods of controlling their numbers, as well as the organization of explanatory work with the population were discussed. Based on the results of the meeting, areas for further interagency cooperation were identified and proposals for preventive measures were developed.

The Trans-Baikal Territory

The administration of the Priargunsky district of the Trans-Baikal Territory reported incoming signals of the appearance of wolves in populated areas. The residents were reminded that wolves are smart and strong animals, they move in packs of 5-7 individuals over long distances, they do not distinguish colors. During daylight hours, the probability of an attack is much lower.

Wolves are attracted to populated areas by open garbage cans, containers and unauthorized landfills, and the presence of crows and rats "means" a source of light food for predators. Residents are advised to stay outdoors as much as possible during daylight hours, not to leave food waste in the open, and to keep pets at home.

When encountering a wolf, you should not approach, turn your back, or run away. You need to retreat slowly, backing away, without letting the beast out of your sight. If the wolf is aggressive, you should defend yourself by aiming at the muzzle and nose.

The Jewish Autonomous Region

The Ministry of Emergency Situations of the Jewish Autonomous Region has warned about the possibility of wild carnivorous animals (wolves, foxes, raccoons) entering populated areas and their contact with pets. This creates a risk of transmission of infectious diseases such as plague, rabies, and leptospirosis. Pets in the Birobidzhan, Smidovichi and Leninsky municipal districts are most likely to become infected.
