The United States has requested the extradition of Russian citizens from Georgia twice in two years. This was announced on September 11 to Izvestia in the Russian Interests Section at the Swiss Embassy in Georgia.
"As for the overall increase in the number of requests from the US government to the Georgian authorities for the extradition of Russian citizens residing/temporarily staying in Georgia, in recent years, the Interests Section has been informed about detentions in accordance with the established procedure twice — in 2025 and this year (in addition to the already extradited S.A.Filimonov, currently T.E.Kurashkevich is being held in custody in Georgia, awaiting a court decision)," the diplomats noted.
According to them, employees of the consular department visited Sergey Filimonov, who was detained in Tbilisi. He was given clarifications regarding the consular and legal aspects of his case. Filimonov expressed satisfaction with the actions of his lawyer, and did not file any complaints about the detention.
On September 12, Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze said that the Russophobia that began to be observed in Georgia was artificial and was directed by external forces to combat it, first of all. He stressed that the Western countries involved had been trying to involve Tbilisi in the conflict in Ukraine since 2022.
